1/3/2009 - Wailua fire confined to one bedroom - WAILUA – A neighbor’s quick action resulted in a Wailua Houselots fire being confined to one bedroom. No one was injured in the fire. At around 7:21 this evening, a woman who lives behind the six-bedroom home located at 295 Lanakila Rd. first noticed smoke coming from one of the bedrooms, and then saw flames. She called 911 and ran over to the burning home to notify the residents, who were having a party in their garage and were unaware of the fire. The owners used a garden hose to fight the fire. It was nearly out when firefighters arrived.

1/2/2009 12:05:33 PM - Body found at bottom of Wailua Falls - WAILUA – A visitor discovered the body of a Caucasian man at the bottom of Wailua Falls yesterday afternoon and contacted authorities. Kaua‘i police, Rescue 3, Engine 3 and Air 1 responded to the call. The man was placed in a litter and airlifted out. His name is not being released until a positive identification by next of kin is made.
1/1/2009 5:06:41 PM - Body found at bottom of waterfall near 'Anini Stream - 'ANINI – A visitor discovered the body of a Caucasian man at the bottom of a waterfall near 'Anini Stream yesterday morning. The name of the man is not being released until a positive identification by next of kin is made. No foul play is suspected. The visitor had been walking down a trail at the end of Wyllie Rd. in Princeville at around 9:30 am yesterday. When he stopped to look at several small waterfalls along the trail, he found a man lying motionless beneath a 10-ft. waterfall.
1/1/2009 8:31:00 AM - Concrete walkway to be built at Ele‘ele Nani Park - ELE‘ELE – Construction on a concrete walkway at Ele‘ele Nani Park is set to begin on Wednesday, Jan. 7. While the work is being done, the park will be closed to the public and will reopen in June upon completion of the project. “I am pleased that construction of the walkway is scheduled to start soon,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. “During the planning phase for the park, members of the Ele‘ele community sat down with us and provided input on what they’d like see at their neighborhood park. The walkway, which will connect all of the elements of the park, was their No. 1 priority.”
1/1/2009 6:39:32 AM - Registration for youth basketball set for Jan. 12 to 14 - LĪHU‘E – The Department of Parks and Recreation announced that registration for the community youth basketball leagues is scheduled for January 12 to 14. Boys and girls, ages 12 and 13, are eligible to participate in the program. Registration will take place from 8 am to 4 pm at the following neighborhood centers: Kalāheo; Kapa‘a; Kīlauea; Līhu‘e and Waimea. The cost for each participant is $30.

12/31/2008 12:10:43 AM - Planned water rate increase to take effect Jan. 1 - LĪHU‘E -- A water rate increase is scheduled to take effect Jan. 1. The increase is based on a comprehensive study conducted in 2005 on the Department of Water’s projected revenues and expenditures that recommended the implementation of a series of five annual 8.5-percent rate increases beginning in fiscal year 2006. The water rate will increase from $2.65 to $2.90 per 1,000 gallons for the standard residential 5/8-inch meter within the first block (initial 20,000 gallon). For the portion of the bi-monthly consumption that is between 20,000 and 40,000 gallons, the second block rate will be assessed. The increase in this category will be from $3.40 to $3.70 per 1,000 gallons. The highest volume residential consumers with usage in excess of 40,000 gallons will pay a top rate of $5.40 per 1,000 gallons.
12/30/2008 9:16:28 PM - Three park rangers added to county staff - LĪHU‘E – Three park rangers recently joined the Department of Parks and Recreation staff, bringing the total number of county park rangers to seven. Wendell Bandmann, Ray Oritz and Eric Rita were brought on board earlier this month to assist the parks department with oversight of the county park system including Ke Ala Hele Makalae, the multi-use coastal path. “Our county parks are natural resources that need to be preserved and protected,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. “Having additional enforcement staff will make it possible for us to closely monitor proper usage of our parks and Ke ala Hele Makalae so that we and generations to come can enjoy these resources.”
12/30/2008 8:34:30 AM - County announces holiday closures - LĪHU‘E – In observance of New Year’s Day, County of Kaua‘i offices will be closed on Thursday, along with all refuse transfer stations, the Kekaha Landfill, Kaua‘i Resource Center and Puhi Metals Recycling Center. All HI-5 bottle redemption centers will also be closed on Thursday with the exception of the Kōloa center, which will be open 8 am to 4 pm. Additionally, The Kaua‘i Bus will not be operating on New Year’s Day.
12/29/2008 6:40:02 PM - Pedestrian hit by pick-up truck - KEĀLIA – A 15-year-old Kapa’a girl was airlifted to The Queen’s Medical Center after being hit by a pick-up truck in Keālia this evening. The girl was crossing Kūhi‘ō Highway at the Mailihuna Rd. junction heading for the multi-use path at around 6:24 pm when she was struck by a northbound Toyota pick-up truck. The girl sustained serious injuries and was taken to Wilcox Hospital via ambulance. She was later medivaced to The Queen’s Medical Center for further treatment.
