The Department of Public Works consist of seven (7) divisions: Administration/Fiscal, Automotive, Building, Engineering, Highways/Roads, Solid Waste Management, and Waste Water Management. Public Works is responsible for the planning, design, and construction of all new improvements to County-owned facilities, excluding Department of Water projects. The maintenance, repair and upkeep of all County facilities and roads, the collection and disposal of garbage and refuse, the collection and treatment of sewage, the review and enforcement of the various codes and other regulations pertaining to public and private construction work.
Facilities managed by the Department of Public Works include four sanitary sewerage facilities - Wailua, Lihue, Eleele and Waimea; one sanitary landfill in Kekaha, and four refuse transfer stations - Princeville, Kapaa, Lihue, and Hanapepe. Also being managed are three road construction and maintenance base yards - Hanalei, Kapaa, and Hanapepe and approximately 235 miles of paved roadways and 40 miles of unpaved roadways. Public works provides repair and maintenance to the buildings within three stadium complexes - Lihue, Kapaa, and Hanapepe; ten neighborhood centers and the island's convention hall along with all other County facilities (excluding Department of Water).
