PUHI – Police arrested Helen Santiago, a 50-year-old woman of Kekaha, in connection with a three-vehicle traffic incident that closed Kaumuali‘i Highway at approximately 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5.
According to a preliminary investigation, at approximately 4 p.m. on Monday, a white 2019 Nissan multipurpose vehicle was traveling eastbound on Kaumuali‘i Highway near mile marker four, when the vehicle side swiped a 2016 Toyota multipurpose vehicle that was traveling westbound. The 2019 Nissan continued to cross the center line and collided head-on with a 2011 Toyota truck.
Police and medics responded to the scene and the front seat passenger of the 2016 Toyota truck was transported to the Wilcox Memorial Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Santiago was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant.
Kaumuali‘i Highway was closed for approximately one and a half hours while police worked to investigate the scene and clear the roadway. Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.
