Do I need to book an out of state appt if I am a Kauai resident?

Yes, any vehicle that has come from out of state and doesn’t have a title from any county in the state of Hawaii would need to book an out of state appointment to process the vehicle at the DMV. 

Why do I need to provide a physical address if I don’t get mail there?

Federal Homeland Security requires you to provide your proof of residency within the state.  PO Boxes will validate your mailing address, physical residency status, would still need to be established.

Why do I need to turn in the notice of transfer when I sell my vehicle?

Because the notice of transfer relinquishes any responsibility for that vehicle from you to the new owner from the date of transfer notated on the notice of transfer and submitted within 10 days of the sale (HRS 286-52(a)). You can mail it in, drop in our drop box, or make an appt to turn it in, in person.

Can I email your office?

Does the dmv take walk-ins?

Yes, but the wait times can be very long. Appt holders hold priority to be served. Walk in customers are serviced as times permits in between appt holders. Walk-in’s stop at 2pm.

If I move, do I need to let the DMV know?

YES! We need to have your current, correct address for both motor vehicle and government credential needs.  In the later case, we would need to have 2 proofs of the new address.

Does the DMV take credit cards?

YES, except Discover or American Express. Card must be present, we can not manually key in cc’s.

What are your business hours?

Kapuna hour 8-8:45am M-F, general public 9-4 with walk-ins ending at 2pm and the last appt being serviced at 3:48pm, windows close at 4pm. Closed Sat & Sun & Holidays.

What falls under Financial Responsibility Section?

If you have received (a.) An Order of security Requirement or Suspension Notice (b.) An Order of Requirement for Proof of Financial Responsibility or Suspension or (c.) if your license has been suspended or revoked.

Can I drop off my SR21 or SR22 at the DMV?

Yes, you may but it has to be the original form from the insurance company.

How can I obtain a verification of my driver's license if I’m Out of State?

Please send us a letter requesting a verification of your Hawaii Driver's License or Instruction Permit and include the following information:

  • Name (as it appears on the license)
  • Address 
  • Social Security Number (last 4 digits) or Hawaii Driver's License number
  • Date of birth 
  • Email address (to notify you of any discrepancy or incomplete paperwork – we do not save this information) 
  • Signature (this will be compared to your signature on file)
  • Self-addressed stamped envelope (if out of the country)

No, you may obtain these documents from the District Court (Kauai).

Are there requirements if I have a medical condition but have been cleared to drive by my doctor?

If you have a medical condition, which may affect your fitness to drive safely, you are required to submit the state of Hawaii, DOT Medical Report form completed by your doctor for review by the Medical Advisory Board (MAB). The MAB will determine your fitness to operate a motor vehicle safely. The Medical Report Form is available at the Driver Licensing Division at the DMV.

How do I renew my Hawaii driver's license if I am currently out of state?

If you are eligible, please send a letter requesting to renew your Hawaii Driver's License. To process the application, the following information must be included in your letter:

  • Name (as it appears on the license)
  • Hawaii Mailing and Physical address
  • Social Security Number (last four digits) or Hawaii Driver's License number
  • Date of birth
  • Email address (to notify you of any discrepancy or incomplete paperwork - we do not save this information)
  • Out of State Address
  • Signature (this will be compared to your signature on file)
