Hawaii Driver's License Renewals

Driver's License

It is the responsibility of the license holder to renew their Hawaii Driver's License prior to the expiration date.

All Hawaii Driver Licenses expire at 12:00 midnight on the expiration date. If the license holder is a member of any component of the United States Armed Forces who is on active federal service and whose driver license expired while deployed outside the United States, the driver license shall remain valid for ninety days (90) after the service member's return to the United States.

You have the option to renew your Hawaii Driver's License at the County Motor Vehicle & Licensing Office within six (6) months prior to the expiration date. All applicants must present original or certified copies from our REAL ID Compliant Document List to prove the following and be able to renew their license:

Step 1.Provide proof of Name.

Step 2.Provide proof of Date of Birth.

Step 3.Provide proof of Social Security Number.

Step 4.Provide proof of Legal Presence.

Step 5.Proof of Principal Residence (Two Documents Required).

Step 6.Complete a Driver's License Application(PDF, 365KB) for renewal that is also available at our driver licensing office.

Step 7.Pass the required vision test.

Step 8.Payment of the appropriate fees. Refer to the Kauai County Fee Chart(DOCX, 22KB).

CDL

It is the responsibility of the license holder to renew their Hawaii Driver's License prior to the expiration date.

Step 4.Provide proof of Legal Presence.

Step 5.Provide proof of Principal Residence (Two Documents Required).

Step 6.Complete a Commercial Driver’s License Application(PDF, 824KB) that is also available at our Kauai DMV.

Step 7.Submit a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Certification. 

     Search the Nearest Certified Medical Examiner (https://nationalregistry.fmcsa.dot.gov/home)

Step 8.Pass the required vision test.

Step 9.Proof for residency, if applicable.

Step 10.Payment of the appropriate fees. Refer to the Kauai County Fee Chart....(DOCX, 22KB)

Expired Driver's License

All driver licenses expire at 12:00 midnight on the expiration date. You may not drive once your driver's license has expired.

An expired driver license may be renewed within ninety (90) days after the expiration date. If the 90th day falls on a weekend or holiday, the renewal, which includes payment of the required fees, must take place by the last working day prior to the 90th day. If the renewal is not initiated, or in the case of renewal by mail, the envelope is not postmarked before 12:00 midnight on the 90th day, a reactivation fee of $5.00 for each 30 day period will be assessed in addition to the appropriate driver license fee.

An expired driver license may be reactivated within one year after the expiration date. If the one year period falls on a weekend or holiday, the reactivation, which includes payment of the required fees, must take place by the last working day prior to the one year reactivation period.

If your driver's license is not reactivated within one year after the expiration date, you will be required to apply for a driver license as a new applicant. Please refer to Class 3 Instruction Permit.
