1:20 p.m., Sept. 19, Wainiha brush fire update

WAINIHA – Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel continue to battle a brush fire on a ridge above Wainiha Powerhouse Road, with about 60% of the blaze contained. Officials estimated the size of the fire to be 20 acres.
Response
Air 1 and Air 3 are conducting water drops. Utilizing utility task vehicles, firefighters made access to portions of the fire and assessing hot spots.
Fire crews kept watch overnight Wednesday, and have command post at Camp Naue. Fire personnel also patrolled Wainiha Powerhouse Road and the Hā‘ena area.
Advisories/traffic notices
There are no road closures or fire threats to homes at this time. Previous reports indicated smoke entering homes in the area.
Resources
Personnel with the Hanalei Fire Station, Air 1, Air 3, and the on-duty Battalion Chief are responding to the incident. Private landowners, Air 2, Rescue 3, Tanker 1, and the Kaua‘i Police Department also responded.
Emergency personnel with the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency are monitoring and are on standby if additional support is needed.
According to a preliminary report, the fire was reported at approximately 8:35 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
