Sept. 18 UPDATE: Ulu Street reopens on Wednesday

Officials announce that Ulu Street is now open. The unstable portion of the affected building has been removed. Mahalo.

KAPA‘A  – Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters extinguished a structure fire in Kapa‘a on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Due to public safety concerns, Ulu Street is closed from Kukui Street to Koa Street until further notice. The structure that was damaged from last night’s fire is unstable. Pedestrians are strongly urged to avoid the area. Updates will be provided when Ulu Street reopens.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a structure fire on Ulu Street in Kapa‘a on Monday shortly before 9:50 p.m.

Personnel with the Kapa‘a, Kōloa, Līhu‘e, and Kaiakea fire stations, the Fire Prevention Bureau, the on-duty Battalion Chief, Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative, and the Kaua‘i Police Department responded to the incident. A retired firefighter who lives near the affected structure was also on scene and assisted.

According to a preliminary report, upon arrival shortly after 9:50 p.m., firefighters discovered a two-story structure fully engulfed in flames. While firefighters were battling the fire, electrical utilities were shut off.

 After firefighters controlled and extinguished the fire, KFD Fire Prevention Bureau investigators took over the scene and conducted an investigation.

Firefighters cleared the scene shortly after 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday.

Damages to the structure and contents are estimated at $1.2 million.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
