Injured hiker rescued on Nounou East Trail Wednesday

WAILUA — Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters rescued a 71-year-old California female visitor on the Nounou East Trail, also known as the Sleeping Giant Trail, in Wailua on Wednesday, June 26.

First responders received a report of a hiker with an apparent leg injury on the Sleeping Giant Trail shortly before 10:30 a.m.

Personnel with the Kapa‘a Fire Station and Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 responded to the incident.

According to a preliminary report, first responders arrived on scene and discovered the injured hiker near the top of the Sleeping Giant Trial.

First responders stabilized the hiker’s leg using a splint, secured her via air rescue vest, and used a short-haul to load and transport her via Air 1 to awaiting firefighters and AMR personnel at a landing zone at Wailua Houselots Park.

AMR personnel continued treatment of the hiker before transporting her to Wilcox Medical Center.

The scene was cleared at approximately 11:15 a.m.
