Līhu‘e – Prosecuting Attorney Rebecca Like announced that Ty Tsuneo Nakamoto, age 30 of Kapaa, was sentenced yesterday, September 13, 2023, to serve ten years in prison for sexually assaulting a minor. He pled guilty to Sexual Assault in the Second Degree.

First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Keola Siu represented the State of Hawaii and Craig De Costa represented Nakamoto. The Honorable Kathleen N.A. Watanabe presided over the case.

An investigation by the Kauai Police Department revealed that Nakamoto had met a 13 year old minor through a dating application and sexually assaulted the minor at the minor’s home. The investigation was led by KPD Detective Darin Irimata. Nakamoto has been in custody at the Kauai Community Correctional Center since March 10, 2023 in lieu of bail.

Prosecuting Attorney Like stated, “Protecting minors is a top priority for our Office. We know that our island is safer when individuals that prey on the vulnerability of children are incarcerated.”
