LĪHUʻE – A man was arrested on Wednesday, Feb. 21 in connection with an assault case that occurred on Nov. 29, 2023.
At approximately 11 p.m. on Nov. 29, 2023, police responded to a call from the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital Emergency Room in connection with an aggressive patient. Chay Ramirez, a 22-year-old resident of ‘Ele‘ele, had been transported to the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital after first responders found him unconscious. Once conscious, Ramirez allegedly made threatening remarks towards hospital staff and inflicted serious bodily injury upon a nurse by biting her as she was attempting to administer medication.
Ramirez was arrested by officers and released pending investigation. This happens when more time is needed beyond the maximum 48 hours of holding in police custody, for police to investigate the case before formal charges are made. After further investigation, the findings were submitted to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney. A warrant was issued, and Ramirez was arrested on Feb. 21, 2024 for the offense of Assault in the Second Degree. His bail is set at $25,000.
“We hold healthcare professionals in high regard for their selfless devotion and expertise. It is unacceptable for them to feel unsafe when they are dedicated to saving lives and promoting well-being,” said Chief Todd Raybuck. “Assault is a highly punishable offense that carries significant repercussions. The Kaua‘i Police Department firmly stands against any acts of violence targeted at healthcare professionals and will take necessary action against such behavior. It is imperative that our healthcare professionals are not subjected to any form of threat or intimidation while carrying out their duties.”
