Missing Kōke‘e hiker found safe Friday afternoon

LĪHUʻE – A hiker who had been reported as missing was safely located on Friday afternoon in Kōke‘e.

Rachel Griffith, a 30-year-old woman from Oregon, was reported missing on Friday, Aug. 30. Police were able to locate her unoccupied vehicle at the Awaʻawapuhi trailhead in Kōke‘e. A coordinated search effort involving multiple agencies— including the Kaua‘i Police Department, the Kaua‘i Fire Department, Kaua‘i Search and Rescue, and the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement—was conducted.

Griffith was found on Kōke‘e Road at approximately 12 p.m with no injuries reported. She had become disoriented while hiking the Awaʻawapuhi Trail the previous night.

“We are thankful that Ms. Griffith is safe and unharmed. Our sincere gratitude goes to the community and our partnering agencies for their diligent efforts in the search. Public cooperation is essential in these situations, and we deeply value the support we have received,” said Assistant Chief Kalani Ke.
