OED invites public to celebrate Earth Day on April 20

LĪHU‘E – The public is invited to join a celebration of sustainability and agriculture at Ho‘olaule‘a no ka Honua, A Celebration for the Earth. This second annual event, hosted by the County of Kaua‘i Office of Economic Development, Kaua‘i Community College, and the Kaua‘i Economic Development Board, is set to take place on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kaua‘i Community College in Līhu‘e.

The festivities promise a day filled with fun, learning, and delicious free food in honor of the island and those who work tirelessly to sustain our community food systems.

“This event is a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge and honor the dedication of individuals and groups committed to improving our long-term sustainability and nurturing our island’s precious resources,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. “We are grateful for all involved in making this event possible for our community and our keiki to learn and enjoy.”

Interim Chancellor of Kaua‘i Community College Margaret Sanchez adds, “Ho‘olaule‘a no ka Honua exemplifies our island's strength in collaboration and community spirit. It's a testament to what we can achieve when we work together towards a common goal."

The day's activities include:

  • Learning Opportunities: Connect with over 20 community-based organizations dedicated to agricultural and conservation efforts on Kaua‘i.
  • Interactive Demonstrations: Dive into the world of sustainability with exciting demonstrations on upcycling plastic, sustainable fishing practices, exploring native sea cucumbers under a microscope, learning about breeding queen bees, and more!
  • Free Chili Bowl: KCC’s Own Culinary Chef, Steven Nakata will be preparing chili bowls with local beef donated by Wailua Meat Company. And for non-meat eaters, we’ll have vegan, jackfruit chili bowl option prepared by Health Go. 
  • Entertainment: Enjoy the lively atmosphere with emcee Chanel Flores and get ready for prize giveaways throughout the day!

This ‘ohana day event is free and open to the public. Officials would also like to thank the event sponsors Kekaha Agriculture Association, Grove Farm Foundation, Wailua Meat Company, and Menehune Water.
