LĪHUʻE – Kaua‘i police are searching for the driver involved in a hit-and-run that occurred early Friday morning in Līhu‘e, which left a 33-year-old man with serious injuries.
On Mar. 22 at approximately 1 a.m., a 33-year-old inmate at the Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center (KCCC) escaped. As he was running northbound in the southbound lane of Kūhiō Highway, he was struck by a southbound vehicle. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene prior to the arrival of first responders. Witnesses described the vehicle as dark colored but were unable to identify the make or model.
The 33-year-old inmate was transported to the Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
Kūhiō Highway was closed in both directions for approximately one hour while KPD’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
Police are asking for information from drivers who were traveling on Kūhiō Highway in the vicinity of KCCC on Friday, Mar. 22, between 12 a.m. and 1 a.m. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to call Officer Henshaw at 808-241-1616.
