Kaua‘i Fire Department to conduct training on Feb. 13

LĪHU‘E – The Kaua‘i Fire Department is announcing that KFD personnel will conduct helicopter and water rescue training at the Ahukini State Recreational Pier in Līhu‘e on Feb. 13, from 8 a.m. to noon.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning for north- and east-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau which is currently in effect through 6 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 4. The warning may be extended, dropped, or modified as conditions develop.

Office of the Prosecuting Attorney Life’s Choices Announces Awardees

Today, Prosecuting Attorney Rebecca Like announced the six recipients of the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, Life’s Choices program Mental Health and Substance Abuse Community Program Grants for Fiscal Year 2023-2024. The total amount awarded is $1,000,000. Project funding will be November 1, 2023 through October 31, 2024.

Re-sentencing of Defendant Mitchell Peralto

Earlier today, Fifth Circuit Court Judge Kathleen N.A. Watanabe re-sentenced Defendant Mitchell Peralto for his 1998 convictions for the murder and kidnapping of 23-year-old Kimberly Washington-Cohen. Peralto was re-sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for kidnapping; and life imprisonment with the possibility of parole for murder. The terms of imprisonment were ordered to be served consecutively

Kaua‘i police are following up on a lead that wanted fugitive Chris Santos may be located on the Westside of Kaua‘i. Out of an abundance of caution, police officers are stationed at schools in the area while investigators follow up on all leads. School pickup and bus service will continue as normally scheduled. Updates will be posted as information is available.

Kapaa Man Sentenced to 10 years in Prison for Sex Assault on a Minor

Līhu‘e – Prosecuting Attorney Rebecca Like announced that Ty Tsuneo Nakamoto, age 30 of Kapaa, was sentenced yesterday, September 13, 2023, to serve ten years in prison for sexually assaulting a minor. He pled guilty to Sexual Assault in the Second Degree.
