Reuse

County of Kauai Reuse Program

Salvation Army Drop-off for Public:

THERE WILL BE NO COLLECTION EVENT IN OCTOBER, 2024.

Next public drop off at the Kauai Resource Center (3460 Ahukini Road) will be on Friday, November 8, 2024 from 8:00am to 3:00pm.  Please check back periodically for updates.****Please double check your donations before bringing them in and be sure they are in BAGS or BOXES. Once you donate an item the County or the ARC cannot return them as there is a huge stockpile of items and some items have already been prepped for shipment off island.

Salvation Army Pick-up for Businesses:

Next thrift store (and businesses) pick-up will be scheduled for Wednesday, November 6, 2024 (not available to the public). Thrift store owners (and businesses) can call 241-4838 or email solidwaste@kauai.gov to schedule a pick up time.

Main Purpose: Assist thrift stores by facilitating the off-loading of unsaleable, but still useable items as well as reducing the amount of reusable items going to the landfill.

The goal is to allow the movement of unsaleable items out of thrift stores so that more capacity can be built up for the public to donate new material that can be sold.

Thrift stores can call 241-4838 to schedule free monthly pick-up service courtesy of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC).

Secondary Purpose: Receive reusable material from the public and businesses that local thrift stores do not have the capacity to take.

The public must contact their local thrift stores before bringing items to the Kaua‘i Resource Center. If your local thrift store is unaware of the program, please direct them to call the County’s Solid Waste Recycling Program Coordinator at 808-241-4838 or aboyd@kauai.gov.

After determining local Thrift Stores are unable to accept your items, residents, businesses, and other organizations can bring in unwanted or unneeded items for reuse, including clothing, small furniture, children’s toys, books, and shoes. Clothing and textiles do not need to be in good condition, torn or stained clothing is acceptable.

What happens to the donations?

Material is shipped to the Salvation Army ARC on O‘ahu for further processing for sale in local markets or abroad.

No scavenging or resale of material will be allowed at the KRC. No one is allowed to remove items once they’ve been dropped off at the KRC.

Will the County help me off-load at the KRC?

No, the County does not have the appropriate staffing to facilitate unloading of vehicles at the KRC.

Please bring your own helpers if you’re dropping off large items including furniture and beds. Furniture and beds must be in almost brand new condition to be accepted, no scuffs, stains, damage, or other issues.

What cannot be accepted at the KRC?

No electronics, motorized vehicles, pressurized containers (valved or devalved), liquids, paints, wet clothes, medical equipment, household hazardous waste or hazardous waste in general, flammable material and other ignitables, or other items deemed dangerous or infeasible to hold at the KRC. The County, ARC, and monitoring staff may reject any and all materials at their discretion. Again, furniture and beds cannot have any stains or tears whatsoever. Furniture and beds with heavy wear and tear will also be rejected.

Thrift stores, residents and businesses with rejected items will be directed to the appropriate waste diversion or disposal site.

Reusable items will only be accepted during hours of operation. Items dropped at other times will be considered illegal dumping.

Material Drop Area: Again, the public should contact their local thrift stores to make sure they cannot take items before coming to the Kauai Resource Center. Habitat for Humanity offers island wide pick-up of eligible items call them at 335-6105 for more information.
